Extruder and Dies
Central to my practice is a custom hand-built cylindrical extruder that I designed and welded to develop this current range of extruded ceramics. The dies that create adaptive and exploratory clay forms are made using metal and plywood through a plasma cutter and fret saws.
The extrusion process mimics many natural processes of plant growth and has the ability to produce great variation and abundance with varied hand manipulations of form. Each of the designs includes hand-building techniques, carving, and ruler-compass geometry.
Applications
The human scale of this extruder suits studio ceramics and designers and presents an energy-efficient alternative and low-cost means of production for rural communities with a range of applications for built environments.
